Different Schools of Buddhism

Question: “What is your opinion on the different schools of Buddhism? Do you believe that there’s right and wrong? I’m really conflicted and worry if I’m following the right path. I’ve heard criticism for each school of Buddhism so I am truly confused as to what I should follow.”

Just like every other religion, they each have their different traditions, congregations, sects, etc. Each competing with the other to be the “right” and “only” religion. But just like Buddhism, all those other religions separated into branches to create different paths depending on the culture – this has the most truth in Buddhism, because that’s exactly why there are so many different schools and traditions; it had to adapt to the culture and society it was being introduced to.

Regardless of the different schools, sects, paths, traditions of Buddhism, they all have the same, basic teachings of Buddha (Four Noble Truths, Eightfold Path, meditation, etc.). There are some schools and traditions that emphasize certain teachings over others like Zen with meditation, or schools like Tiantai (the school I’m in) that primarily works with and emphasizes the Lotus Sutra.

Regardless of what criticism there is for any of the schools or traditions, the decision is ultimately up to you. You have to find what works for you, what agrees with you, and ultimately what will liberate you. You can even be a rogue Buddhist (someone who’s self-teaching) and study sutras and texts based on your own interest and beliefs. No one, school, or tradition can enlighten you, only you can enlighten yourself! The teachings are simply the ways and guides to help you get there, but only you can be the captain of your ship to cross over the river of suffering.

Smile and be well!
