Question: “How to reconcile between thinking and feeling. Most of time i act based on feelings which i have to repent later on. Even though my thoughts are clear.”
This is a tough question and something I might not be able to fully answer, but I’ll try my best. Thinking is a natural thing. Because we have perceptions, when we see, hear, touch, taste, or have feelings for something, we’re going to create an idea about it. We think because of our feelings, and because of our feelings we think. Both are illusions and creations of our mind. All feelings are our own creation, whether the feeling is good, bad, attractive, or unattractive, we think that they have this independent, real quality to them, that everything we think or feel is true and right. However, this is false. If everything we think or feel causes us to believe that they are inherently true, then these thoughts and feelings would be true for everyone and everyone would think and feel the exact same way.
You might have heard the quote, “think before you speak.” This is a half right, half wrong idea. Because if what we’re thinking that something is good, bad, or attractive or unattractive, then we can conclude that this is something we’ve created and projected by our mind. However, we are not perfect beings. We are not yet highly realized or enlightened, so these mistakes will always be one of our faults. That’s okay. Because once we realize this, we’ll realize that our view on reality is exaggerated and one-sided.
Sometimes we commit sexual misconduct because we have feelings of lust and desire. At that time we don’t notice that we’re being sucked into the trap of lust and desire until later when we feel bad and repent. Desire is one of the major causes of suffering. With ignorance and attachment, it is the source of our mistaken views and dissatisfaction. Once we train our minds to go beyond seeing things as just good or bad, attractive or unattractive, and be able to view everything with equanimity, we won’t have to be controlled by our thoughts and feelings.
I probably went off topic a lot, but that’s what I got. For now.
Smile and be well!
