What is Nirvana?

Question: “I read the basics about Buddhism and I like what’s promoted.I don’t believe in any God .I have one question: What is actually the Nirvana? I mean if I’m good and my next life will be better than this why I would want to get to Nirvana?”

Nirvana is not a destination or a finish line. It is, in the simplest of terms, complete peace of mind. Nirvana needs to be worked for, it needs to be attained. So just because you do good in this life does not necessarily mean your next life will be nirvana. Nirvana is not meant for future lives. It is for this life, in present moments.

So what is nirvana? Like I said, it is complete peace of mind. It is free of ignorance, greed, anger, hate, jealousy, confusion, etc. It is a mind free of defilements. It’s true doing good in this life will potentially grant you a better next life, but if you attain nirvana now, that doesn’t mean you will be born into nirvana. Even for those who have attained enlightenment, like bodhisattvas, have to re-enlighten themselves when they are reborn.

Nirvana is peace and happiness that is non-stop.

Smile and be well!
